Panelist Bios:
Mary Moore Easter is the author of a memoir The Way She Wants to Get There and four books of poetry including Free Papers, inspired by the testimony of Eliza Winston. She was the Founder and Director of Carleton College’s dance program. In 2022, Carleton College named their new studios in the Weitz Center for Creativity to honor her legacy: the Mary Easter Dance Studios. Now emerita professor, she continues in her performance and written works the overlap of movement, words and song sourced from African American culture.
Christopher P. Lehman is a professor in the Department of Social Sciences at St. Cloud State University. He is the 2023 winner of the Minnesota Humanities Center’s Ruth Riester Award and the 2020 winner of the Minnesota Book Award in the Minnesota Nonfiction category for his book Slavery’s Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State. He has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. His latest book is It Took Courage: Eliza Winston’s Quest for Freedom.
